Hey folks, here's a quick update
Still getting settled in at Churchill. It's a pretty good school, only about 550 kids or so. I'll be teaching classes next week, grade 10 geography and grade 11 history. I'm also sitting in on grade 9 social studies and a technical education class involving garageband. Everyone is pretty cool.
I've definitely noticed that it is trickier to have a more student-centered approach. It is harder to maintain control if the teacher is not keeping the kids in line. A lot of kids are absent quite often as well. Sometimes they just get up and leave, but they usually just dont show up. Planning is pretty important at this level as well. Classes at the end of the day are filled with kids that just want to go home. It's much harder to keep them on task if they are excited to leave.
I'm balancing my time between Churchill and the U of W where I am coaching JV girls. My time is going to disappear pretty quickly once everything gets goin full steam. I'm looking forward to the challenge and to hear more of your stories.

Good to hear Rob. I can totally see my time disappearing as basketball season rolls around as well. Would have been cool to get our teams into the same tourney, but I've got grade 8 boys. Unless we have 3 seven footers, we probably won't be entering any HS tourneys.
ReplyDeleteI hear you guys. Next week, I start coaching JV basketball along with my grade 6's accross the city and come Dec, I'll be starting my second part time job at MEXX. Ah the life of a teacher. Love it
