So I taught my first full class today. Grade 10 geography. We started a new section on natural disasters and hazards. The class uses a smartboard, so I was able to put all my powerpoint slides up on the screen. NOTE #1: dont use too many animations or transitions with a smartboard if you want to walk around the class. You have to go back too often to click to the next point.
I decided to change the way my class took notes. I made it easier for them, or so I thought. The concept of taking information and putting it in a blank was lost on a lot of them. We worked through it and got ready to watch a video. NOTE #2: Redekopp was right, when you need stuff to work it won't. The computer crashed halfway through the video and we had to take an intermission to fix it.
Overall, I thought everything went really well. A lot more students were on time today and they were quiet for most of the class too.
I asked a student who wasnt in my class to remove his hat in the hallway. The response I got was "F*** you". I have to meet with his mom and him tomorrow morning so that he can apologize to me. Pretty funny.
That's all I've got, I'm teaching the rest of the week and into the next.
Peace
Mr. Goodman
thanks for the tips Rob, I'll be using a smart board on Thursday. I'll think about a back up plan now. Keep on Keepin' on
